THE REASONS FOR CONSIDERING A RESCUE DOG

Now that you have had the opportunity to decide whether or not you have the heart to consider a Rescue Dog, here are the reasons why you should contact us.

One of the frequent reasons people decide to rescue is that they know that many people will not consider a second hand dog. They know that finding the right homes for these dogs is difficult. They understand that dogs are very adaptable.

Rescue is an option that most people don’t consider because they think that what they are getting is a dog that someone else didn’t want. Therefore there must be something wrong with it. That is not the case. None of our Rescue Dogs has anything wrong with it that would prevent it from being a good companion. If it did, it would not be up for adoption.

Rescue Dogs are like good second hand cars. They have been tuned up, they are behaving well, and they are ready to please a new family. The kinks have been worked out or eliminated.

We have a combined experience of 85 years with dogs. Of those years, 72 have been with the same breed – OES. If we cannot agree on whether or not a dog is capable of living with someone else, then the dog is not listed for adoption until we feel it is ready. If it cannot live with us, then we have a decision to make. The same principles apply to all those who work with Rescue across the country. (Don’t forget this applies to only those dogs which are deemed to be OES – no mixes.)

Many people choose Rescue Dogs because they do not have to deal with training a new puppy and suffering through the house breaking period and the chewing stage. Then, let’s not forget the sleepless nights when the new puppy voices its displeasure of having to be by itself without its siblings. Normally, a new dog can advance to sleeping by your bed, if that is what you want, after only a bit of an upset the first one or two days.

It is amazing how quickly dogs can switch allegiance. Rescue families tell us that generally it takes a week for the dogs to be totally at ease .Normally dogs do not experience any separation anxiety. We think that the dogs know whether or not the people have a feeling for them.

If we have any inclination that the dog does not feel comfortable with the people/person wishing to adopt, we don’t do the adoption. Similarly, if we feel that the family/person is wrong for the dog, even though the dog doesn’t seem to object; there is no adoption. We try to figure out what the problem is and go from there. We do not want the animal to experience any more problems and we want our families to be happy with their new addition. Rescue is not a process that assures you a dog regardless.

All dogs in the Rescue program are immediately checked by a veterinarian if we do not have their files from their previous owner. All dogs from shelters go immediately to be checked before they come onto our property. All dogs are spayed or neutered if required. All dogs have their vaccinations brought up to date. Those who stay with us during Heart Worm season are tested and placed on medication. If a dog is surrendered by its owner with all its medical files up to date, then unless there is cause for concern, we do not do a check.

The adoption donation which we request is one which makes adoption an option for those who cannot afford a puppy but who do want to provide a home for an OES. The donation helps to pay for the veterinarian visit, spaying/neutering, food and all the other things that require money in order for us to run the Rescue Program. The donation is reasonable and is subject to change depending on the costs of running the program.
