The Old English Sheepdog is a 150 year old herding breed originating in England. Being an agile, intelligent dog they were used as a drover’s dog to drive livestock to market.

At that time in England, dogs who worked were exempt from tax. To identify the working dogs, the farmers started the practice of docking tails. Since then the term “Bobtail” is used. Now, they can be seen in the fields of England herding sheep. They were also used on the battlefields during the war.

The Old English Sheepdog came to Canada and the United States in the early 1900’s as show dogs, family companions, and later in the movies.

The Old English Sheepdog is a loyal, gentle friendly, versatile breed with natural herding instincts. They love to be part of the family and join in on any activities.

They have a long heavy coat requiring grooming or may be kept short in the summer. For exercise long walks in the morning and evening are sufficient.

They love children and to run and gallop or just to be hugged. The breed is very versatile and you can find them in the Obedience and Conformation Show rings. They also compete in Rally, Agility and recently the practice of herding trials has become popular.
